Our verdict: a genuinely free, open-source Microsoft Office alternative with excellent OOXML fidelity — stay on 9.3.0 or later, verify downloads against the GitHub digests, and note the mobile app's tracker findings.
ONLYOFFICE Desktop Editors is a free, open-source office suite from Latvia-based Ascensio System SIA that bundles word processing, spreadsheets, presentations, and a capable PDF editor into a single application for Windows, macOS, and Linux. Its standout strength is fidelity to Microsoft's OOXML formats: DOCX, XLSX, and PPTX files open and save with formatting intact, making it one of the smoothest transitions away from Microsoft Office. Companion mobile apps for iOS and Android and web-based editors extend the suite beyond the desktop.
The entire codebase is published on GitHub under the AGPL-3.0 license, and GitHub shows a SHA-256 digest for every release asset so downloads can be verified against tampering. The desktop suite works fully offline; connecting it to a cloud — ONLYOFFICE DocSpace, Nextcloud, or another document server — is strictly optional. Version 9.3.0 (February 2026) closed a Windows attack chain later published as OnlyShells, and 10.0.0 (October 2026) added 33 more security fixes and moved AI into an optional plugin.
