Independently checked by Altapp where possible; developer-reported data is labeled as such. Last full review: Jul 19, 2026.

Verified Source

Open source under MPL-2.0, developed in public on GitHub.

  • Source code public at github.com/zen-browser/desktop (43k+ stars).
  • Licensed under the Mozilla Public License 2.0.
  • Built on Mozilla Firefox and the Gecko engine.
  • Desktop builds are signed and notarized with auto-update; no independent security audit found.

Data & Permissions

The team removes Firefox's telemetry and states it collects no personal data.

  • No account required to browse.
  • Firefox's built-in telemetry and crash reporting removed by the team.
  • States it collects no personal data, telemetry, or crash reports.
  • Optional Sync reuses Firefox Sync: end-to-end encrypted, stored on Mozilla's servers under Mozilla's policy.

Known Risks

A young, fast-moving community fork rather than an independently audited product.

  • Current release is a beta line (1.21.8b, Jul 2026).
  • No formal third-party security audit found.
  • Privacy claims are self-stated; the team notes it may have missed some telemetry.
  • Inherits both the strengths and the vulnerabilities of the underlying Firefox engine.

Verification reflects the version listed above. Practices may change between releases. How we verify ›

Our verdict: a calm, well-designed Firefox fork that brings vertical tabs, workspaces, and split view to Gecko — capable and privacy-minded, but a young, fast-moving community project with no independent security audit yet.

Zen Browser is a free, open-source desktop browser built on Mozilla Firefox and its Gecko engine. It reworks the interface around vertical tabs in a collapsible sidebar, Workspaces for separating tabs by context, Split View for side-by-side tiling, Glance link previews, and a Compact Mode for a distraction-free window. It keeps full Firefox extension compatibility and adds deep theming through Zen Mods.

Because it is a Firefox fork, Zen inherits Mozilla's rendering engine and built-in privacy protections while the team strips Firefox's telemetry and states it collects no personal data — with their own caveat that some may remain. It is a young, fast-moving community project: releases ship frequently on a beta line, there is no formal third-party security audit yet, and the optional Sync feature reuses Firefox Sync (end-to-end encrypted, stored on Mozilla's servers).
