Our verdict: a genuinely open-source Jira and Linear alternative you can self-host today — the AGPL Community edition is free and capable, with separately-licensed commercial editions and a managed cloud available on top.
Plane is an open-source project and issue tracker for software teams — organize work as issues with sub-issues, group it into time-boxed cycles (sprints) and modules, and switch between list, kanban, calendar, spreadsheet and Gantt views. Built-in pages (wiki), an intake inbox and analytics round it out as a Jira, Linear or ClickUp alternative.
The Community edition is AGPL-3.0 open source and can be self-hosted on Docker or Kubernetes, so your project data stays on your own infrastructure. Some governance and enterprise features live in separately-licensed Commercial/Enterprise editions, and a managed Plane Cloud offers a free tier plus paid plans — so 'free' applies to the self-hosted community edition and the entry cloud tier, not the whole product.
