Independently checked by Altapp where possible; developer-reported data is labeled as such. Last full review: Jul 19, 2026.

Verified Source

Odoo's Community edition is genuinely open source, while the Enterprise edition is proprietary and paid.

  • Community edition is open source under LGPL-3.0, free to download and self-host
  • Full source for Community is published on GitHub under odoo/odoo
  • Enterprise edition is proprietary under the Odoo Enterprise Edition License (paid, non-redistributable subscription)
  • 'Open source' applies only to Community; Enterprise adds proprietary apps like Studio plus hosting and support

Data & Permissions

Self-hosting keeps your data on your own infrastructure, while Odoo's hosted options run it on their cloud.

  • Self-hosted Community or Enterprise keeps your database on your own server (Linux, Windows, Docker or source)
  • Hosted options — Odoo Online (SaaS) and Odoo.sh — run your data on Odoo's cloud instead
  • Access is through the web browser with companion iOS and Android apps
  • Self-hosted instances involve optional update-registration pings rather than mandatory usage analytics

Known Risks

A few caveats to weigh before relying on it.

  • 'Open source' covers only Community; Enterprise features (Studio, fuller Accounting/MRP) require a paid proprietary license
  • Choosing Odoo Online or Odoo.sh means your data is hosted on Odoo's cloud, not your own servers
  • No public third-party security audit is confirmed from official sources
  • Signed builds are not confirmed; verify downloads against official Odoo sources

Our verdict: an all-in-one open-source business suite whose Community edition is genuinely LGPL-licensed and fully self-hostable, while the Enterprise edition that adds more apps, hosting and support is proprietary and paid — a capable self-hosted alternative to a stack of separate SaaS tools if you stay on Community.

Odoo is an all-in-one business suite that bundles more than 40 tightly integrated apps — CRM, sales and quotations, inventory and warehouse management, accounting, Point of Sale, manufacturing (MRP), HR and payroll, plus a website builder and eCommerce — into a single platform. It is developed by Odoo S.A. (Belgium) and runs self-hosted on Linux, Windows, Docker or source, through the web browser, and on companion iOS and Android apps.

Being honest about the model: Odoo is open-core. The Community edition is genuinely open source under LGPL-3.0 and free to download and self-host, so your data stays on your own server and database. The Enterprise edition — which adds apps like Studio, fuller Accounting/MRP features, mobile conveniences, hosting and support — is proprietary and sold as a paid, non-redistributable subscription. Odoo also offers hosted options, Odoo Online (SaaS) and Odoo.sh, where your data lives on Odoo's cloud rather than your own infrastructure.
