Our verdict: a genuinely local-first outliner that keeps your notes in plain-text files you fully own — an excellent privacy-first choice, though the v2 database rewrite is still in public beta.
Logseq is a privacy-first, local-first outliner and knowledge base. Your notes are stored as plain-text Markdown (and Org-mode) files on your own device, so the app works fully offline and no cloud account is required to use it.
It is built around blocks rather than pages, with bidirectional links, page and block references, backlinks and an interactive graph view, plus daily journals, queries, PDF annotation and whiteboards. Sync is optional and end-to-end encrypted via Logseq Sync. Note that the current flagship is the ground-up database (DB) rewrite (v2.x), which is in public beta as of Jul 2026, while the original file-based app is now in maintenance.
