Our verdict: a fully self-hosted photo and video backup — a genuine Google Photos alternative where your library and machine-learning processing stay on hardware you control, with no telemetry sent to the developers. It reached a stable 2.0 release in October 2025 (now 3.0.3) under FUTO, but it does require Docker and some technical setup, and we could not verify signed builds or an independent security audit.
Immich is a self-hosted photo and video backup platform — an open-source alternative to Google Photos. It automatically backs up photos and videos from iOS and Android, and adds CLIP-based natural-language search, facial recognition with people clustering, albums and partner sharing, a map and timeline view, RAW support, and multi-user access with OAuth.
You run Immich on your own server, deployed with Docker (roughly 6 GB RAM and 2 cores recommended), so it takes some technical setup — but every photo, thumbnail, and machine-learning job stays on hardware you control, and nothing is sent to the developers. It is released under AGPL-3.0 by the Immich team as part of FUTO, and reached its first stable release (v2.0) in October 2025.
