Our verdict: a fast, native terminal that runs entirely on your machine — open source under the MIT license, no telemetry, with code-signed and notarized macOS builds. There is no native Windows app yet; it ships for macOS 13+ and Linux.
Ghostty is a GPU-accelerated terminal emulator that uses each platform's native UI toolkit — SwiftUI on macOS and GTK4 on Linux — rather than a shared cross-platform shell. It supports tabs, splits and multiple windows, scrollback search, the Kitty graphics protocol, a drop-down quick terminal, and live configuration reload.
The project is open source, developed by Mitchell Hashimoto and the Ghostty community, and released under the MIT license with its full source on GitHub. It requires no account and makes no network calls for core use; official macOS binaries are code-signed and notarized by the project, while Linux is distributed through package managers and source. Native Windows support is not yet available.
